MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP:
PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING ASSURES SUCCESS TO COMPETE

The Construction Skills, Inc. pre-apprenticeship training program offers unique career opportunities to New York City Public high school students and residents of the New York City Housing Authority to enter into apprenticeship programs jointly sponsored by unions and contractors in the construction industry. High school seniors from the five boroughs are currently embarking on the beginning of their careers as union trades people, and will be given the keys to succeed in union apprenticeships through Construction Skills’ pre-apprenticeship training program.

As of last fall, over 1,000 graduates have been placed into a union apprenticeship program of the building and construction trades and have been given the finest instruction to prepare them for entry into the unionized construction trades. Graduates of Construction Skills leave the program with skills needed to successfully complete their apprenticeship and become journeypersons, foremen, shop stewards, and union organizers. Our candidates are also offered a lifetime to earn good wages with healthcare and retirement benefits, a rare opportunity at a time when unemployment rates are at their highest.

We continue to encourage leaders in both public and private sectors to support our commitment to building careers for New York City’s construction professionals, especially in these economic times. The support you provide allows us to help members of our local community to share in the opportunities that are created through the building trades. We are committed to keeping our local community strong and we urge you to join us.

  CONSTRUCTION SKILLS 2009
PRE-APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Construction Skills is pleased to announce the start of the 8th year of the successful pre-apprenticeship program this spring. The program provides an opportunity for graduating high school seniors and residents of the New York City Housing Authority, to prepare for entry into apprenticeships with the union affiliates of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York (BCTC).

Through the provision of classroom and hands-on training, students complete the program armed with the skills necessary to be successful in the unionized construction industry. During their senior year of high school, students follow a 10-week course called Introduction to the Building Trades which meets once a week for three hours at the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE), which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing New Yorkers with education, employment and advancement programs. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the union construction industry through understanding of topics such as; the role of the union, workplace behavior and culture, apprenticeship system, blueprint reading and more. Participants will also attend symposiums at the BCTC union affiliate training centers where apprentice directors and instructional staff provide students with specific information about their respective trade and take students on a tour of their training facilities.

Upon successful completion of Introduction to the Building Trades, students enter into an intensive 4-week, hands-on training with outdoor projects at various training sites throughout the city. This program component allows the students to gain knowledge of basic hand tools and provides simulated construction site experience. The instructional staff is comprised of union journeypersons who serve as mentors, foremen and teachers and evaluate the participant’s abilities in the areas of work ethics, teamwork, reliability, and motivation.

Graduates of Construction Skills are afforded an advantage of gaining access to apprenticeship opportunities because they do not have to participate in the public recruitment process.

Nicole Bertrán, Vice President of Program Services, welcomes this year’s new pre-apprentices and looks forward to working with each of them to make their experience in training as rewarding as possible. Those interested in applying for future programs can contact Nicole at info@constructionskills.org.
